Norfolk Southern $NSC +5% — Shares climbed following a report that Union Pacific (UNP) is in early talks to acquire its smaller rival. The deal would create the only coast-to-coast rail network in the U.S., combining UNP’s western routes with NSC’s 19,500-mile system across XX eastern states. While UNP CEO Jim Vena has touted the benefits of a transcontinental railroad, any deal would face major regulatory hurdles from the Surface Transportation Board, DOJ, labor unions, and Amtrak.
