We got a Tesla for my friend’s girlfriend so that she wouldn’t have to commute to work and could use FSD.

But she’s having so much fun driving it manually she’s not using FSD much. When she does try to use FSD, the driver monitoring system beeps at her a lot because she sits so close to the wheel, and she doesn’t notice the blue flashes on the screen (hasn’t learned to recognize it yet) so she got a strike.

She also says she likes to text and use her phone in traffic, which FSD doesn’t allow.

As a result she hasn’t really started using FSD much, which surprises me a little but not that much. Maybe it’ll take some time to learn for her.

This highlights the awkward “puberty” stage Tesla is in right now. They’ve started marketing FSD more, and the joy of driving a Tesla less. But FSD still isn’t clicking with a lot of consumers right away, in large part because of the challenges associated with having to supervise it.

What do we do about this? Maybe a gamified FSD on boarding guide that walks you through how to use it? Disable cabin camera attention monitoring in traffic jams (slow speed)? Maybe just marketing the classic benefits of Tesla ownership more?

As Tesla begins to provide a truly unsupervised experience on customer cars, it will be a lot easier for new users to pick up.
