Belift Lab: “The real issue is Min Hee-jin insisting she created everything—if ILLIT is plagiarism, NewJeans could be just a copy.”

Belift Lab, the agency of girl-group ILLIT, has rebutted former ADOR CEO Min Hee-jin’s allegations that ILLIT plagiarized NewJeans.
On July 18, 2025, the 12th Civil Division of the Seoul Western District Court held the third hearing in Belift Lab’s ₩2 billion (approx. USD XXXX million) defamation and business-interference suit against Min Hee-jin.
Min has claimed since April 2024—after HYBE initiated an audit—that “ILLIT copied NewJeans,” asserting that “ILLIT is imitating NewJeans in every aspect of its entertainment activities.” Belift Lab filed the suit in June 2024, stating, “These claims are clearly false.”
At the first hearing on January 10, Belift Lab argued: “The core of the defendant’s unlawful act is a targeted smear campaign. She identified rookie groups, who have limited means of self-defense and could become potential competitors, then relentlessly pushed her claims. The defendant herself has previously faced plagiarism controversies.”
Belift Lab pointed out that Min bases her allegations primarily on images of members standing in a single line—a composition “by no means exclusive to the defendant.” If Min’s argument were accepted, “even NewJeans’ concept photos could be reduced to mere copies,” the agency emphasized.
Belift Lab cited the example of the girl-group GFRIEND—not to accuse NewJeans of plagiarism—but to illustrate similarities such as transitioning from 16:9 high-definition to 4:3 low-definition in music videos, full shots of schoolgirls running across a bridge, school-uniform concepts, shots in identical compositions with props in front of red structures against a sea-and-sky background, hanbok-themed pictorials, white-outfit group photos with similar compositions, and dream-like concept photos. “Just because some elements overlap, that does not mean ILLIT copied NewJeans, any more than NewJeans copied GFRIEND,” the company argued.
Belift Lab also noted: “The defendant has exaggerated coincidental similarities, misrepresenting them as deliberate plagiarism.”
“The choreography combinations and sequences of ILLIT and NewJeans are entirely different. The defendant selectively uses isolated screenshots as ‘evidence,’” Belift Lab explained, comparing the detailed choreography. It highlighted that, apart from commonly used public-domain dance elements, “the specific choreographic structures differ significantly,” labeling Min’s claims as “forced” and adding, “anyone could edit split-second movements to look similar.”
“She distorts selective snippets to her advantage, but even if a few screenshots appear similar, it does not make the two groups identical,” Belift Lab continued. The agency further clarified that the photos, concept images, and music videos Min presented as proof “were edited and presented out of context to seem alike; in reality, the original materials convey distinctly different atmospheres.”
In conclusion, Belift Lab asserted: “The suggestion that our agency, after significant investment and the collective efforts of countless people, would deliberately manufacture a ‘plagiarist idol group’ defies both common sense and reality. If ILLIT were merely a copy, it could not have set new domestic and global debut records.” Therefore, Min’s statements constitute “the dissemination of false facts.”
“As an industry expert, the defendant had an elevated duty of care, yet she attacked ILLIT without basic fact-checking,” Belift Lab said, accusing Min of “claiming public-domain elements as her own property and falsely alleging that ILLIT plagiarized NewJeans.”
