The promoters' claim that you're spending gold is true because spending gold means deploying the value of gold in order to buy things.

When I go to the grocery store, take those bananas from the shelf, give you my American eagle, you convert it into $XX and pay at the check out, I have spent my American eagle in order to buy bananas.
This is a correct sentence in English.

Second, you are omitting the case of both buyer and vendor having a gold account, in which case there is no fiat conversion and no Visa/MC involved: the ownership of allocated gold bullion gets transferred from the buyer to the vendor.
This is as gold spending as it gets, even by your arbitrary definition of gold spending.
