I've never disclosed this, but in between his election and installation, Justin Welby invited me to Lambeth Palace for a coffee (which ended up including an almost private Holy Communion in the crypt). He told me that he considered the Reformation the greatest tragedy for the Church, and for Europe. I demurred, of course. But I still can't quite fathom why you'd want to lead the Church of England if you believed its very foundation to be a disaster.
