Ugandans abroad are about to suffer...

While yesterday's @DailyMonitor paints a bright picture of growing remittance inflows, I can’t help but feel like we’re missing part of the story. Yes, more money is being sent home. But so are the number of excuses, "projects", and unfortunately, relatives who see this money as free lunch.

Remittances are saving lives, but they’re also funding betrayal, abuse of trust, and in many cases, dreams that never make it past the foundation stage.

Now don't get me started on the new visa renewal hurdles for the Ugandans traveling to work in the USA (renewal every X months). There’s a growing fear that more countries might follow suit, tightening regulations on the very people sending this money home. Did you hear how the tax man also wants some fo that money now? YEAH...

So yes, let’s celebrate the $XXX billion+ in remittances Uganda received last year, but let’s also ask:

Are we doing enough to protect the people behind these transfers?

I pray the upcoming 8th Annual #BankingConf25 answers these questions too, since the theme is around remittances. We can’t afford to only see the fruit. We need to examine the tree, roots, rot, and all.

What’s y'all honest take on this? 🤔
