Got to consider oxygen levels. The Age of Salamanders/Age of Giant Insects (The Permian) was >25% oxygen suppressing plants, along with low CO2 suppressing plants. Suppressed plants = suppressed animals. When oxygen dropped the larger skin-breathers (arthropods, salamanders, griffinflies) did not survive. Fungi and moss ceased to dominate the landscape. Plants and animals flourished instead. I think it misleading to call that an extinction, as there was more life after than before and smaller versions of everything basically survived.
