The Battle off Samar part of the Battle of Leyte Gulf between Task Force XXXX (Taffy 3) part of Seventh Fleet on XX October, 1944. 

Taffy X had X CVEs, X Fletcher-class DDs and X John C Butler-class DEs faced down Force A from the IJN 2nd Fleet which had X standard size BBs and your favorite coral reef, the former HIJMS YAMATO. X heavy cruisers, X light cruisers and XX destroyers.

And Taffy X won at the cost of X CVEs(USS Gambier Bay and St. Lo), X of the X Fletchers (USS Hoel and Johnston) and one particularly prickly John C Butler-class destroyer escort named USS Samuel B Roberts, who fought so fiercely and expertly she was regarded by BOTH sides as "the destroyer escort the fought like a battleship" with her skipper CDR Ernest E Evans was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his leadership, tactical acumen and self-sacrificing dedication to duty.
