Most people across the U.S. have no idea of the Alabama tornado tragedy that happened on April 27, 2011. A total of XX tornadoes in one day, responsible for the deaths of XXX people in our state.

A few days later, Osama bin Laden was killed. Weeks later, an EF-5 tornado wiped out Joplin, Missouri. The media moved on. Most folks around the country believe tornadoes happen only in Oklahoma, based on the "Twister" movies. They have no idea Alabama has more strong tornadoes per square mile than Oklahoma.

April 27, 2011 was our 9/11. My friend Kim Cross captured the event in her book "What Stands In A Storm". She got it right, it is an amazing read. I was delighted this piece she wrote for ESPN that was released today about Bo Jackson’s charity bike ride that raised more than $X million for the Alabama Governor’s Relief Fund.

I think about 4/27/11 most days; it is one of the reasons for the new Alabama Weather Network that begins operation August XX. I hope you spend a few minutes and read this piece.
