But few have made the connection between Jewish heritage and the genocide in Gaza. Unfortunately, the Tanakh has several instances of genocide. They are all recounted approvingly. Perhaps the most famous example is the destruction of Amalek. God commanded Saul to wipe out Amalek completely as punishment for their attack on Israel during the Exodus. Samuel 15:3: "Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass." Another example is the conquest of Jericho. Under Joshua’s leadership, the Israelites were commanded to annihilate Jericho, destroying all living beings there. Joshua 6:21: "And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, ox and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword." Then God ordered the Israelites to destroy all (or many) of the rest of the Canaanites. Deuteronomy 20:16-17: "But of the cities of these peoples which the LORD thy God gives thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breathes; but thou shalt utterly destroy them..." An earlier example if the destruction of Midian After Midian led Israel into sin, Moses was commanded to take vengeance. Numbers 31:7-18: "And they warred against Midian, as the LORD commanded Moses, and slew every male. And the children of Israel took the spoil of their enemies." None of this is to say that Judaism is necessarily genocidal. But there are genocidal and supremacist elements to the religion. This is why the work that Reform Judaism has done to counter these narratives is so important. It is no coincidence that streams of Judaism that take these words literally are also very much behind the genocide. The story of Amalek has been used famously to justify the genocide in Gaza. Just as Islam needs reform to rid itself of radical Islamism, Judaism must reckon with its genocidal dispositions. What is happening in Gaza now is not divorced from this biblical heritage.
