This is because, as per the piece, "70% of countries now conduct more trade with China than with America" and "more than three-quarters [of the world's countries] judge China more favourably than the US"; meaning that if a cold war were to break out, it'd likely be China containing the US instead of the reverse. Wertheim argues that, given this, the US should take a more pragmatic approach, particularly when it comes to green technology. For instance "if American carmakers fail to produce affordable EVs comparable to BYD’s", what's the point of banning Chinese EVs in the US? The US ends up harming its citizens' pockets and falling behind key global trends for no concrete benefit: it only ends up hampering US growth and reducing US influence even further.
