The hipsters and other cultural groups like emo/punk that selected for societal rejects turned into woke freaks. A lot of this started with entertainment going from apolitical to political. The Daily Show was formative propaganda for millennials.

Then you have the first generation where colleges massively recruited minorities and international students. Combined with second generation immigrants from boomer third world mass immigration who harbored massive racial grievances. 

These groups were able to form a non-insignificant cohort on campus and started taking over student councils where they were able to push out communist propaganda to every new student on campus.
