As I’ve said (repeatedly): this began with Hikmat al-Hijri - one of the three top Druze clerics in southern Syria, a former Assad loyalist now protecting narcotics routes into Jordan and the Gulf. Ironically, some Sunni Bedouin clans from Daraa are involved too - hence the feuds.

The other two Druze leaders, Hammoud al-Hannawi and Yusuf al-Jarbu’, sought compromise with Damascus - autonomy in exchange for peace. Damascus agreed: civil and police structures would remain Druze-run. But Hikmat rejected it all.

Old, erratic, and surrounded by loyalist ex-militia, he wanted total control - especially to protect his illicit operations. Five days ago, his men attacked rival Bedouins. The Bedouins struck back. It nearly turned into a massacre.

Hannawi and Jarbu’ pleaded for government intervention. Damascus forces came - only to be ambushed by Hikmat’s militia. XX soldiers killed, XX captured, later executed. The army retaliated. Druze militias then retaliated again. Now we have XXX dead.

That what caused Israel to intervene: to “protect the Druze”. But I suspect there’s more to it - and that’s how we got here.
