During the 1942 Battle of Savo Island, 19-year-old Signalman Elgin Staples was blown overboard when the USS Astoria was hit by Japanese fire. Wounded and alone, he survived the night using an inflatable life belt. 

After his rescue, he discovered the belt was made by Firestone and stamped with an inspector number. 

Back home, his mother, Vera Staples, revealed it was her number and had inspected the very belt that saved his life.
