Horror movies have never gotten respect from “mainstream” reviewers (yeah I know). 

When Alien came out, the Time magazine review mocked the mollusc-like monster and talked about how lame it was. I went to see Alien based on that review because even then - in 1979 - I knew not to trust them and a mollusc as villain sounded interesting. 

Lovecraft’s book “Supernatural Horror in Literature” is one long argument about why horror should be taken seriously, so it was prevalent then too.
