Because he thinks he lives in a timeline where Kate  was preparing to toss his ass out of Badlands.

So he did to her first.

He was merely ‘defending’ himself, to hear him tell it. 

But he doesn’t live in such a timeline. 

It’s an excuse he proffers for what he did to her that doesn’t stand up to even mild scrutiny.
