One piece of good news this morning in an otherwise lawless and gloomy Middle East is that the Druze man Mirhij Shaheen, in his eighties, seen on camera with radical Islamists force-shaving his mustache and beard and who was then reported dead, is still alive.
His look in this photo tells the story of decades of government failure in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Egypt, Libya, Algeria, Somalia, failure that is always swept away under the rug of anti-imperialism, Arab nationalism, Islamism, Palestine, and other concepts that are irrelevant to improving the lives of tens of millions of Arabic-speaking populations.
