They counted on the symbolism of his Blackness to pacify you— to make you believe this country had turned a corner when it was quietly doubling down on surveillance, drone strikes, and Wall Street bailouts. ⸻ 👔 Obama was the soothing voice of empire after X years of brute force. He didn’t end the wars. He didn’t close Guantanamo. He didn’t break the banks—he bailed them out. He told you “Yes We Can” and gave corporations more power than ever. And when the people rose—Occupy, Ferguson, Standing Rock— he told them to calm down, wait, be realistic. ⸻ 🎭 Liberals call him a symbol of progress. But the truth? He was a firewall. A brand refresh. The Pentagon’s TED Talk. A centrist in a crisis costume, wrapped in poetry, speaking of hope while deporting more immigrants than any president before him. ⸻ 🪞 And what about now? He resurfaces only to protect the donors. To silence the progressives. To tell the people organizing for housing, healthcare, and justice that they’re being “too much.” ⸻ 🧠 It’s time we stop worshipping symbols and start recognizing systems.
