🐍 The Cobra Effect: How DeSci’s Best Intentions Could Backfire

In colonial India, British officials wanted to reduce deadly cobra bites. So, they paid people for every dead cobra turned in.
At first, it worked. Then, people started breeding cobras just to kill them for cash.
When the bounty was canceled, they released the snakes. The problem got worse.

That’s the Cobra Effect. When solutions backfire 💥

Now let's talk about how it could sneak into Decentralized Science (DeSci).
DeSci is built on ideals of transparency, permissionless collaboration, and incentives for contribution.

But what happens when those incentives get gamed?

🔹Publishing low-quality research just to earn tokens 🧪💰
🔹Voters prioritize flashy AI projects over solid biology studies
🔹Friends rig votes to fund each other
🔹Data being manipulated to meet funding milestones

Decentralization isn't immune to unintended consequences.

DeSci could dodge this by:
✅ Rewarding quality (rigorous, reproducible work) over flashy projects.
✅ Using blockchain’s transparency to spot fraud fast: If someone’s gaming the system, the data will snitch.
✅ Empowering the community to call out bad actors.

🔸This is what @circularweb3 is tackling...building an infrastructure that is compliant with the rules and regulations that prevent negative practices.

🔸Before DeSci can be fully adopted, DeSci projects needs to be regulatory compliant or build on an infrastructure that is compliant with these rules and regulations.

The 🐍Cobra Effect teaches us that intentions don't equal outcomes.
DeSci is not immune to human nature’s knack for exploiting loopholes.
