It is protected by two walls, the outermost of which extends for almost 800m, making it an imposing structure. Particularly striking is the view of the fortress and underlying historical village at night. The castle is one of the most visited monuments in the region and is scene of museum events, musical and artistic. Gradara was, by geographical position, since ancient times a crossroads of traffic and people: during Middle Ages, fortress was one of main theatres of clashes between militias loyal to papacy and turbulent families Romagna and Marche. Situated at 142m above sea level, with Republic of San Marino, Rimini and Carpegna in background, Gradara represents an extraordinary urban and architectural combination. Legend has it that the castle was the scene of the famous and tragic love story of Paolo and Francesca, caught in each other's arms and killed by Gianciotto, Francesca's husband. This love story was immortalized by Dante in his Divine Comedy. Gradara Castle dates back between 11th-15th Centuries AD. Its history is inextricably linked with the infamous feuds between Malatesta and Montefeltro families. This long-standing conflict came to a halt only after the control of the castle fell into the hands of Sforza family. It was Dante, however, who intervened with his Divine Comedy, making the castle the locale for the tale of Paolo and Francesca and thus turning the castle forever into a symbol of love. According to TravelItalia; experience centuries of history in a stunning setting at the walled hamlet of Gradara. The magical village is enclosed within its protective walls, with the castle itself at the peak, its "skyline" enhanced by the battlements. Nestled in the hills of northern Le Marche where it brushes up to Emilia Romagna, the castle looks like a fairytale or movie set. In fact, it is one of the best preserved castles in the country. It was built as a military post then became a noble residence for a veritable Who's Who of Italian power - the Malatesta, Sforza, Borgia and Della Rovere all had possession at one time. #archaeohistories XXXXXX engagements **Related Topics** [italy](/topic/italy) [Post Link](https://x.com/histories_arch/status/1945784333404668082)
