Why is it so controversial to suggest that employees can decide whether they want to take a job for the wage offered?

I used to work in a poor rural county in upstate New York. Having people in New York City or Washington DC decide what the minimum wage should be is devastating to places like that.

The YMCA paid a very low minimum wage to retirees who were living on Social Security and appreciated the extra income. Also teenagers who lived with their parents.

Membership in the YMCA was $XXX a year. If you imposed New York City minimum wages on a place like that, they’d have to raise the membership fee to $1000 a year or more, and then no one could afford to be a member.

This will also drive businesses to automate as much as they can to reduce the number of employees they have to pay.

Socialists never create businesses, but they’re confident they can tell business owners how to run their businesses.
