Norman Powell was essentially replaced by a cheaper version of himself in Bradley Beal. Beal is not a significantly better player overall, but he gives the Clippers what they need from their SG: playmaking, self-creation, and composure in a playoff setting. Beal’s bargain deal helped them land John Collins who is a true PF who can rebound, space the floor, block shots, and rotate on defense, allowing the Clippers to play bigger and move Kawhi back to his natural SF spot. Beal and Harden will likely start together, and yes… that backcourt has defensive questions. But the Clippers have the infrastructure to support them. With Leonard, Zubac, Collins, Dunn, Lopez, Batum, and Jones Jr., the Clippers have length, rim protection, switchability, and help defense everywhere else on the floor. This team was already 3rd in the league in defense last season… and now it’s deeper and more versatile. Since Paul George’s exit, the Clippers have stayed competitive while gaining cap flexibility, positional balance, and a path to cleanly pivot off the Leonard–Harden era by 2027. People will find a way to hate these moves because it’s the Clippers who did them. People hated how the Clippers allowed Paul George to walk away “for nothing” too. But it was smart. And in today’s NBA — that’s how contenders survive. Being smart and working the margins.
