Read two books on vacay: a jack reacher thriller (always great) and Tacitus’ Annals, which covers the Roman period b/w Augustus’ death and Nero’s death, about XX years of history at the height of Rome’s power (and when the empire was mostly at peace).

Well worth reading ancient history every now and then. Other than the shocking similarities in how humanity was then, as now, it really reinforced how completely brutal and arbitrary life was, even for the most powerful men in the entire world (the members of the Roman senate, eg).

Violent, instantaneous and unavoidable death was totally the norm. On the regular they were accused of false schemes and crimes by a paranoid emperor and summarily executed.

Always worth remembering how completely blessed we are to be living in the time we do, and with the panoply of freedoms, and rights, which we take for granted but were unavailable to essentially all humans, at all times for almost all human history.
