L Venkata Subramaniam (@folktechnology ), @IBM 's Quantum India Leader, believes India has a rare opportunity to lead in quantum computing not by chasing qubits alone, but by owning critical layers of the supply chain. “The processor is the heart, but it's not everything,” he said, pointing to software stacks, cryogenic amplifiers, and control circuitry as areas where India can build global leadership and avoid past mistakes of missing out on classical computing infrastructure.

The momentum is already building, with India’s deep-tech startup scene seeing a surge. “They thought XX startups might apply. Do you know how many applied? 104,” Subramaniam shared, highlighting the unexpected scale of interest under the @nqmdst . Backed by IBM’s mentorship and academic guidance, these startups could form the backbone of a thriving quantum ecosystem. States like Andhra Pradesh are joining the push with “quantum valleys,” aimed at accelerating innovation on home soil.

IBM, meanwhile, stays ahead globally with a clear decade-long roadmap. “We will have error-corrected qubits by 2029, and that’s ahead of the peers,” said Subramaniam. He emphasized that while India may not build the most powerful quantum hardware yet, its strength lies in software and applications. “If you want to use a quantum computer to solve problems, this is where that solution should come,” he concluded, underscoring the need for indigenous innovation.
