While money surely plays a major role, in the case of the current mass departure of OpenAI top talent, it is probably not the only reason.
Sam Altman has been known within the company for many years for his notorious lies, deception, and manipulative power games, which are unparalleled even in these circles, so that even a boss like Mark Zuckerberg might seem like an improvement to OpenAI employees.
There may be another reason that motivates some engineers to leave OpenAI. While Suchir Balaji was a humble man who never made a big deal about his key role in the development of ChatGPT, every top scientist at OpenAI is likely aware of his significant contribution to ChatGPT and his gruesome fate.
Regardless of who commissioned his murder, it is a fact that the sloppy investigation and the hasty determination by the relevant authorities in San Francisco that he committed suicide point to powerful, influential actors.
OpenAI's top employees, who have recently turned their backs on their employer in such large numbers, will likely not have failed to notice that Suchir Balaji was a vehement critic of OpenAI's business practices and, in particular, was downright disgusted by the unethical behavior of Sam Altman.
The fact that Suchir Balaji died so gruesomely, just months after leaving OpenAI and shortly before the start of a trial against his former employer, in which he was scheduled to testify as a key witness, may have deterred other insiders from coming forward to blow the whistle. On the other hand, it has certainly worsened the already tense working atmosphere at OpenAI, which has existed for years and has encouraged the flight of so many key employees to other companies.
