NAMIB MINERALS IS BEING STRATEGIC: As I tweet, diamond-dependent economies are on a tailspin, thanks to the rise of synthetic diamonds. Worse for monocultural economies with the diamond sector as the only source of economic activity. Namibia is close to that category, although it has many other possibilities, including fossil fuels, fisheries, livestock and tourism. Meanwhile gold-led economies like Zimbabwe continue to enjoy fabulous windfalls, thanks to the worldwide retreat from the inflation-hit USD. The cross-border move by Namib Minerals in the direction of diversifying its portfolio has to be understood from that angle. The move also means Zimbabwe’s disused gold mines are in resurgent demand. We need to drive good bargains while they last!!!!
