#OTD in 1862, David Glasgow Farragut became the first U.S. Navy officer to be promoted to the rank of rear admiral. Two separate classes of destroyers and five total U.S. Navy ships have been named in his honor. A statue in Washington, DC's Farragut Square was dedicated in 1881
