 * Al-Qaeda (AQ): A global Sunni extremist organization founded by Osama bin Laden. It has been responsible for numerous attacks, including the September 11, 2001, attacks in the United States.
   * Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP): An active affiliate primarily operating in Yemen.
   * Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM): An active affiliate operating in North Africa and the Sahel region.
   * Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS): An affiliate operating in South Asia.
 * Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), also known as ISIS or Daesh: A highly violent Sunni jihadist group that emerged from al-Qaeda in Iraq. It declared a "caliphate" and has conducted extensive terrorist attacks and held territory in Iraq and Syria.
   * ISIS-Khorasan Province (ISIS-K): A regional affiliate operating in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
   * ISIS-Sinai Province: Active in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula.
   * ISIS-West Africa Province (ISWAP): Active in Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin.
   * ISIS-Libya, ISIS-Bangladesh, ISIS-Philippines, ISIS-DRC, ISIS-Mozambique, ISIS-Greater Sahara, ISIS Somalia: Other regional affiliates.
 * Taliban: An Islamist militant movement and political force in Afghanistan. While they now control Afghanistan, they have a history of terrorism and are designated as such by various entities.
   * Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP): Also known as the Pakistani Taliban, a separate but related group operating in Pakistan.
 * Boko Haram: A jihadist terrorist organization based in northeastern Nigeria, also active in Chad, Niger, and Cameroon.
 * Al-Shabaab: A Salafist militant group active in East Africa, primarily Somalia, and an affiliate of Al-Qaeda.
 * Hamas: An Islamist militant group and political organization primarily active in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
 * Hezbollah (Hizballah): A Shia Islamist political party and militant group based in Lebanon, which is heavily supported by Iran.
 * Al-Nusrah Front (Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham - HTS): Formerly an al-Qaeda affiliate in Syria, it has since claimed to disassociate from al-Qaeda but remains a significant armed group.
 * Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG): A jihadist militant group operating in the Southern Philippines.
 * Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM): An umbrella organization of several jihadist groups in the Sahel region, including AQIM.
 * Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM): An Islamic extremist group based in Pakistan, primarily active in Kashmir.
 * Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT): A Pakistan-based Islamic terrorist organization.
 * Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ): A Palestinian Islamist terrorist organization primarily active in the Gaza Strip.
