He says that "free and open trade is good for both Australia and China," an obvious coded criticism of American policies around trade: quite ironically being "free and open" is now siding with Beijing over Washington. He emphasizes several times the importance of stability in the relationship with China, again probably a reference to Trump's characteristic instability, and also likely a jab at his predecessor's confrontational approach to China. Lastly, and probably most consequentially, he explicitly frames China as integral to Australia's security multiple times - not just economic prosperity but actual national security. He writes that the relationship is important "for our economy and security" and that dialogue with Beijing is "key to the security and prosperity of our nation." This represents a potential paradigm shift from the traditional approach of seeking security FROM Asia through Western alliances, toward seeking security IN Asia through regional engagement. Something many major Australian figures, such as former Prime Minister Paul Keating, have been advocating for years - that Australia must stop seeing itself as somehow separate from its own neighborhood. What makes this moment different is that these aren't just academic arguments anymore, but coming from a sitting Prime Minister on an official visit (to China, of all places!), even if we're still admittedly in the realm of rhetoric.
