XX% of those leases went to rich, politically connected figures aligned with Fidesz. Not local farmers. ‣ Tender rules were deliberately manipulated. Per-person lease caps were quietly raised from XXX to 1200 hectares. The result? A single “smallholder” could now legally hoard enough land to be a regional baron. ‣ Iconic community farms like Kishantos (452 hectares of organic land) were destroyed, leases revoked and handed to Fidesz-friendly newcomers who ploughed the fields into oblivion. ‣ When state land was auctioned in 2015–16, Orbán lied again. He called it the “fulfillment of a hundred-year-old smallholder dream.” It was nothing but a fire sale for oligarchs. ‣ Existing leaseholders—who were already insiders—got first rights to buy. XX% of the XXXXXXX hectares sold went to a handful of players. ‣ In Csongrád County, one single political clan (relatives of former minister János Lázár) bought over XXX hectares. In some counties, XX% of land was sold in massive parcels, unaffordable to real farmers. ‣ XX% of auctions had only one bidder, and lands sold at starting price—meaning deals were fixed in advance. ⸻ Lőrinc Mészáros became Hungary’s biggest fake farmer ‣ Mészáros, Orbán’s childhood friend from Felcsút, became the biggest landowner by exploiting these auctions. His family got over 1500 hectares. ‣ He didn’t stop. He later bought Mezort Zrt., one of Hungary’s largest farming conglomerates. ‣ He is now one of the top recipients of EU agricultural subsidies in all of Europe, despite doing fuck-all actual farming on some of the land. ‣ Bonafarm, owned by another Orbán ally, Sándor Csányi (Hungary’s richest man), also hoovers up massive EU subsidies. ‣ Together, these two control more farmland and more CAP money than the bottom XX% of actual farmers combined. ⸻ EU money designed for poor farmers now funds Orbán’s elite ‣ The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) gives subsidies per hectare.
