Volcanic eruption prompts new evacuations in Iceland

A new volcanic eruption has occurred in southwestern Iceland, with lava and thick smoke spewing from the ground.

This is not the first eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula — volcanic activity in the area resumed in 2021 and is expected to continue for decades.

According to the meteorological service, magma broke through the crust this time, forming a fissure up to one kilometer long.

The eruption has been described as relatively small. Flights at Keflavík Airport have not been canceled.

Due to the threat, tourists were evacuated from the Blue Lagoon resort, along with residents of a nearby town.
