The FTSE XXX closed slightly lower on Wednesday following reports that Donald Trump may attempt to remove US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, raising concerns over the central bank’s independence. The blue-chip index fell 0.1%, while the FTSE XXX dropped 0.4%.

Trump denied showing House Republicans a draft letter to dismiss Powell but admitted discussing the idea:

“I haven’t drafted a letter. I talked to them about the concept of firing him. I said: what do you think? Almost every one of them said that I should. But I’m more conservative than they are.”
