Queen Camilla today became the first woman and the first royal family member to be appointed Vice Admiral of the United Kingdom. The honorary appointment was created by Henry VIII in 1513 and conferred upon Camilla in recognition of the high regard she commands with Royal Navy sailors. The ceremony was held aboard the submarine HMS Astute for which she serves as a sponsor.
