The con artist known for "selling" the Eiffel Tower was Victor Lustig. He successfully convinced a group of scrap metal dealers that he was authorized to sell the tower for scrap in 1925. Lustig even faked official documents to appear legitimate. He managed to collect a substantial down payment before disappearing, only to attempt the same scam again a few weeks later.
