Originally built in the mid-1970s, it’s the primary evacuation route for port cargo and traffic from Lagos airport and the Trans‑West Africa Highway In November 2018, President Buhari flagged off the reconstruction under a tax-credit PPP involving Dangote Industries and subcontractor Hitech Construction. Construction began in early 2019, with an expected two‑year delivery. By April 2021, the expressway was declared “virtually ready” President Tinubu officially inaugurated the fully reconstructed expressway in May 2024, marking a significant upgrade to port access.
