Modern Mumbai was built on the Opium trade to China. Brits wanted Chinese tea, but didn't have gold/silver Chinese wanted. So they got Chinese hooked on Opium, and bartered opium for tea. Opium was grown in Bengal, Bihar, UP, transported to Bombay and shipped by Tata, Wadia, and bunch of other Parsi traders to China. Tata and Wadia both made their fortunes through Opium trade.
