I’m just about to go on Ukrainian TV to share my views on the past week, the announcement, the optics, and what the future may hold as we approach the end of Trump’s 50-day warning.

For those posting pictures of Trump’s wife in Ukrainian colours and clinging to hope that the Trump administration has changed, take a hard look at the last six months. Trump has pulled humanitarian aid, defunded war crimes investigations into abducted Ukrainian children, halted and restarted arms shipments, and even gone as far as suggesting Ukraine was responsible for Russia’s invasion.

Monday’s statement gives Russia space to finish its summer offensive, all in the same week Trump had no issue slapping XX% tariffs on the UK and Europe, while applying zero new pressure on Russia or announcing additional sanctions.

The sales-pitch energy that got even the most skeptical of us cautiously hopeful last week has already fizzled. In my view, this is still a U.S. administration looking at dollar signs, not a genuine policy shift.

That said, if this leads to unlocking seized Russian assets to buy U.S. weapons, great, Ukraine needs them. But make no mistake: if Europe is footing the bill, it’s Europe that’s supplying Ukraine, not America.

Just like buying a car outright, it doesn’t belong to the dealership anymore. The same principle applies to HIMARS or air defense systems. Ownership matters.

I genuinely thank the U.S. for its support, and I have endless respect for those Americans who consistently campaign for Ukraine and understand the threat Russia poses. But a word of caution, the Trump administration has never been Ukraine-friendly. I remain deeply skeptical that anything has truly changed.
