The Western Sahara was never a sovereign Algerian territory—Spain handed administrative control to Morocco in 1975, and the Green March sealed the demographic reality. Algeria props up the Polisario front as a buffer-state project, but XX countries now recognize Moroccan sovereignty over the whole territory, the U.S. opened a consulate in Dakhla, and no serious power treats Tindouf’s puppet republic as legitimate.
