ANCHOR BORROWERS PROGRAM (ABP)

Overview:

Launched on November 17, 2015 by CBN under Late President Buhari, the Anchor Borrowers Program was established to boost agricultural production, reduce food imports, improve rural livelihoods,  promote food security and link Smallholder Farmers with Anchor Firms (Large-Scale Processors and Buyers) in Nigeria. 

Model: 

-The CBN provided single-digit loans (9% or less) to farmers through Deposit Money Banks (DMBs), Microfinance Banks (MFBs) and other financial institutions.
-Farmers received input support (seeds, fertilizers, agrochemicals) in kind, and to be paid after harvest
-Anchor firms (producers and large-scale buyers) guarantee offtake of produce, ensuring market access for farmers. 

Achievements: 

-Over N1.2 trillion disbursed (as at 2022)
-Over 4.8m smallholder farmers benefited from the program across the XX states and FCT in Nigeria
-Over XX commodities supported including rice, maize, wheat, cassava, sorghum, groundnut, etc. 
-About 5.2m hectares of land cultivated 
-over 10m direct and indirect jobs were estimated to be created.

This remains the most ambitious Agricultural Program in the history of Nigeria and is a BUHARI LEGACY PROJECT.
