View of the Martian Olympus Mons from Space

Olympus is a huge volcano, which is considered extinct. Its absolute height is just over XX km. If you were standing on the top of Olympus, you would not notice that you were standing on a very high mountain, since the slope of the volcano extends far beyond the horizon.

It is believed that Olympus was formed due to lava flows that erupted from the bowels of the planet and then solidified. The width of the volcano exceeds its height by almost XX times, which led scientists to the idea that eruptions at the site where Olympus was subsequently formed occurred for a long time, perhaps hundreds of millions of years.

The age of the youngest lava flows, traces of which were noticed on the northwestern slope of Olympus, is only X million years. From a geological point of view, they appeared quite recently, which suggests that the volcano may still be active, although the activity is most likely weak and its traces cannot be seen on the surface.
