It’s true that Romans ate pork freely and even used it symbolically and politically in regions like Judea, especially after they replaced the Hellenistic kingdoms—pigs became common in the local diet except among Jews, and the Romans sometimes mocked Jewish customs by “weaponizing” pork.

Islam’s prohibition on pork does have both cultural-religious and environmental roots: while the Islamic ban echoes Jewish laws, in the hot and arid regions where Islam first spread, pigs were generally less practical due to their need for water and their omnivorous diet, which overlaps with human food needs.

So both environment and religious influence played a role in why pork is avoided in Muslim-majority societies—but the Romans definitely didn’t have this restriction and were known for their love of pork.
