Michael Dell is warning that Meta’s aggressive push to hire top AI talent could backfire internally.

On a podcast with Bill Gurley and Brad Gerstner, the Dell CEO said Meta’s hiring spree—marked by massive pay packages—could trigger resentment among existing employees. If not handled carefully, it might lead to what Dell called a “line of complaining employees” outside Mark Zuckerberg’s office.

The issue, Dell noted, is fairness. Employees tend to compare their compensation to what others are making, especially if new hires are brought in with significantly higher pay. That kind of disparity, he warned, could hurt morale and create distractions.

Meta recently launched its Superintelligence Labs to pursue artificial general intelligence. In the process, it's recruited top engineers and researchers from rivals like OpenAI, DeepMind, Apple, and Anthropic. While this might give Meta a strategic edge in AI, it also raises cultural risks.

Dell isn’t the only one voicing concern. OpenAI’s Sam Altman previously described Meta’s hiring tactics as “distasteful,” and said it could force a compensation review across his own teams. Meanwhile, others like Reid Hoffman argue the moves make economic sense in a high-stakes race for AI dominance.

Still, Dell’s message is clear: success in AI won’t just be about talent—it will also hinge on internal
