Tim, if you're an innovation maximalist, you should check out $KAS.

It's basically $BTC, but with significantly better technology.

$KAS uses proof of work, didn't have a pre-mine, doesn't have a central figure, not VC backed, no ICO.

$KAS is decentralized, secure, AND scalable (solving the blockchain trilemma).

I encourage you to study it. You may find it interesting as you're an innovation maximalist.
