Just X years ago this house sold for $176k, X bed X bath, XXXXX sqft. Interest rates then would have been around 3%. The XX% down would have been $XXXXXX. The monthly mortgage would have been about $XXX.

To buy it now, you need $70,000, and the monthly mortgage would be $2,059/m

This is the cheaper end of housing anywhere within like XXX miles of NoVA. It's hard to find a house sub 300k that's in decent condition and not a X hour+ drive if there's no traffic (There's ALWAYS traffic).

The apartment I had after college that was only an hour drive into NoVA that was $830/m in 2009 is now close to $3,000/m and they haven't updated anything. It still has shitty old cabinetry from the early 90s and nasty carpets.

People say move to where it's cheaper, but there's damn near no jobs anywhere close to where houses are reasonable. I can forgo all of the convivences living in society brings, but I need some form of an income. So how do people afford to live where the jobs are when housing costs have gone off the rails, inflation has gutted your buying power by XX% in the past X years, and wages haven't kept up?
