How did you learn Korean? yn: How did you first learn Korean? andrew: Thank you for creating this opportunity. I'm really excited about Derpy and also grateful for the community’s efforts. I was born in Korea and moved to the U.S. when I was X years old. I can understand most of what I hear in Korean, but I sometimes struggle to speak because I lack vocabulary. X. What led you to support Derpy, and how do you plan to integrate it into the Candle platform? Question: What made you support Derpy, and how do you plan to utilize Derpy and the community on the Candle platform? andrew: There are so many meme coins launching on Solana. Some are bundled, others grow organically. But Derpy stood out because the community had strong grassroots momentum. I was especially moved when yn worked so hard to support Derpy, even while being hospitalized. The dev burned all their allocated tokens, and I even repurchased Derpy using fees I paid and burned them that level of dedication was inspiring. Even when the price dropped over the weekend, the Telegram and Twitter community remained extremely active and passionate. Given my Korean roots and all these factors, I couldn’t help but support Derpy. X. How did you get into crypto? yn: How did you first get into crypto? andrew: I discovered crypto in 2012. Before that, I worked at a payment company and started an online payments-related startup in Georgia. In 2011–2012, I came across IRC servers discussing Bitcoin in dev communities, and I fell completely into it. In 2013, I built a P2P marketplace called contributed to open-source Bitcoin development, and later created a layer X naming service called Handshake. I've been building and investing in crypto for XX years. I’ve always been interested in Korea and its communities, and I’ve visited every other year. I'm grateful to see the support for Candle from this community. X. Meaning behind the name “Candle” and future plans yn: What’s the meaning behind the name “Candle” and what are the future plans? andrew: The name “Candle” holds two meanings: One is the physical candle flame The other is the candlestick chart used in trading The combination of those two images really resonated with the team. From 2020 to 2023, I spent time in nature thinking deeply about where things are heading. I noticed an overlap between content creators and meme coins — and especially saw potential at the intersection of meme culture. Going forward, Candle will focus on combining live streaming, video, culture, and crypto. X. What made you interested in Derpy initially? yn: What made you first become interested in Derpy? andrew: I first heard about Derpy through someone named Popo. It piqued my interest and I bought a little. I also appreciated that a Korean launched Derpy on the Candle platform. X. Background of Derpy andrew (question): Can you explain the story and background of Derpy? yn (answer): Derpy is a mascot tiger character from the Netflix animated series K-POP DEMON HUNTERS. He acts as a messenger for the main character “Jinwoo,” spitting out letters from his mouth. He may look silly and dumb, but he’s actually cute, funny, and full of charm. He’s gained popularity on social media, and fan art and other derivative works are also being created. X. Candle’s market strategy vs. Pump fun / Bonk fun yn: Pump fun and Bonk fun seem to dominate the market. What’s Candle’s competitive strategy? andrew: Rather than trying to steal market share from existing platforms, we aim to expand into new markets. For example, the online gambling market is much bigger than the meme coin market. Meme coin trading is a better structure than gambling, and there’s still a massive untapped opportunity. Pump fun introduced the XX SOL bonding curve a bold move. But now, we realize that not all tokens need the same curve there’s room to innovate in mechanisms and structures. Crypto marketing is still text-based (Telegram, Twitter, KakaoTalk), while entertainment is increasingly video-based. Crypto is lagging behind in that area. We believe there's room to grow by rethinking how attention and hype are built. X. Streaming system and influencer marketing plans yn: Will there be influencer-based marketing once streaming is implemented? andrew: Yes, we’re preparing for influencer partnerships. We're also designing new incentive mechanisms to attract streamers to the platform directly. Right now, unlike Pump fun where devs stream themselves, Candle’s system allows only invited streamers. We’ll start with that model, but eventually find a middle ground to open up the platform to more creators. X. Community communication & AMA plans yn: Some holders feel there’s a lack of updates. Are regular AMAs or roadmap shares planned? andrew: Yes, we know we need to improve on this. There has been some progress recently in community engagement, but I admit this is still a learning process for me. In the past, I reported to top-tier VCs in my startups that's very different from updating a public token community. We want to avoid overpromising and underdelivering. Before launching Candle, we carefully debated what vision to share publicly on Twitter. XX. CMO’s network and role yn: The CMO seems to have a strong network. What are your thoughts on that? andrew: We have a strong team focused on marketing. Unlike my past startup teams, this team has deep experience in the Solana meme coin trenches. We’ll continue to experiment and iterate to find the right business model. More team members will be revealed and involved publicly over time. @candledottv @mauritsneo @aleedotg XXXXX engagements **Related Topics** [korea](/topic/korea) [ama](/topic/ama) [Post Link](https://x.com/yeonwoo1102/status/1945155938782208334)
