It always has been. You can't use politics anymore—too controversial—but you can field goody points by acting like you have no opinions at all. You say you love free speech and civil disagreement! Maybe throw out some letters and an opinion essay no one will ever read. You aren't problematic or contentious, you're agreeable! Ponderous! Throw a couple grand at someone who gives you tips on your essays and "profile". You are prolific at "engaging with the world" without ever facing the reality that the world loves to slam onto people. Vanity, vanity, vanity is all they expect, and it's what you, so graciously, provide. You are respectful of all sides. You comment and faux-debate some evergreen position. You stand for nothing, and so, there's nothing to fall for. Run amiss with your generalizations and niceties all the way to Harvard, Stanford, or whatever school has graduated the rich and powerful. If politics is professional lying, you're playing politics with no stakes at all. Feign and deflect all that comes your way. Positions are playthings, hoarded and discarded at the whim of popular zeitgeist. There is no Overton window for you are the window itself. Transparent. Clear. Easy to throw a rock at.
