Putin to ignore Trump’s ultimatum and continue the war, aiming to escalate conflict with the U.S. — Reuters

Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to press ahead with the war and intensify confrontation with the United States until the West agrees to his terms for peace, three Kremlin-linked sources told Reuters.

According to them, the Kremlin is prepared to keep fighting, betting on the collapse of Ukraine’s defense — and may expand its territorial demands as Russian forces advance. Putin reportedly believes the Russian economy is strong enough to withstand any additional Western measures.

“Russia will act based on Ukraine’s weakness,” said the third source, adding that Moscow might halt its offensive after capturing the four Ukrainian regions if it meets strong resistance. “But if that resistance collapses, a larger conquest of Dnipro, Sumy, and Kharkiv will follow.”

Putin’s conditions for peace, the sources said, include a legal commitment from NATO not to expand eastward, Ukrainian neutrality and limits on its armed forces, protection for Russian-speaking citizens, and recognition of Russian control over occupied territories. At the same time, he is open to discussing security guarantees for Ukraine with major powers.

“Putin believes that no one — including the Americans — has seriously engaged with him on the details of a peace settlement in Ukraine, so he will continue until he gets what he wants,” said one of the sources.

He added that Putin did not feel the recent positive talks with special envoy Whitcoff had evolved into the substantive discussion on peace terms that he had hoped for.

The second source said Trump has little influence over Putin and suggested that even if Washington imposes tariffs on buyers of Russian oil, Moscow will find ways to continue selling on global markets.

“Putin understands that Trump is unpredictable and could take unpleasant steps, but he is maneuvering to avoid irritating him too much,” the source said.

He also warned of a likely escalation in the coming months and highlighted the danger of growing tensions between the world’s two largest nuclear powers. His forecast: the war will go on.
