Actually, it isn't. This is a crime against culture (including the Russian one) and its future. Gergiev is a Russian official and Putin's ally. He did not condemn the war but openly supported Putin and his policies. Gergiev persecuted and fired musicians from the Bolshoi and Mariinsky theaters who opposed the war. He carried out real political purges. Many Russian musicians, artists, and representatives of Russian culture have openly condemned the war and had to leave Russia. What do they see now? That those who support Putin and the war, who receive awards, positions, and money in Russia, are now being rewarded with performances on world's best stages? Europe is in danger. European leaders openly say that Russia is an existential threat to Europe. Gergiev is a representative of Russia, a representative of war criminals. He made a conscious choice not to stay out of politics, but to support Putin and his criminal regime instead. He deserves an appropriate attitude for his choice.
