On October 7, Aner, 22, an off-duty soldier in an elite reconnaissance unit, hid from Hamas terrorists in a bomb shelter alongside XX others at the Nova festival, catching and throwing back seven grenades before the eighth exploded and killed him. In the shelter with Aner was his childhood friend Hersh Goldberg-Polin, who was kidnapped into Gaza and murdered in captivity in August 2024. Overnight, Aner’s father Moshe posted on Facebook an image of an IDF grave, with the engraved text: “Cleared for publication: Was not granted a draft exemption.” For those unfamiliar, no phrase strikes more fear into Israelis’ hearts than “cleared for publication.” Each time they read it, they know what comes next: the name of a soldier who has fallen defending the homeland. And as Israelis mourn the latest three soldiers killed in Gaza, Haredi leaders are doing everything in their power to prevent their men from carrying the same burden. Now, with his coalition crumbling, his people grieving, and the conscription crisis nearing a breaking point, Netanyahu faces a reckoning not just in the Knesset—but with the very soul of the nation.
