The English Civil War (1642–1651) was a series of conflicts between supporters of King Charles I (Royalists) and Parliamentarians, driven mainly by struggles over political power and the rights of Parliament versus the monarchy, as well as deep religious divisions.

It ended with the execution of Charles I, the brief republican "Interregnum" under Oliver Cromwell, and eventually the restoration of the monarchy—while also laying important groundwork for British constitutional government.

The French Revolution (1789–1799), on the other hand, was a much broader and more radical upheaval fueled by social, economic, and class inequalities under the *ancien régime*, as well as dissatisfaction with royal absolutism and financial crisis.

The revolution overthrew the monarchy, declared a republic, radically changed French society (including abolishing feudalism and declaring formal equality under the law), and led to periods of violence and upheaval before culminating in Napoleon’s rise to power.

While both conflicts saw the monarchy challenged and briefly replaced by republics, the English Civil War was more about the balance of power and religion, whereas the French Revolution was a mass social movement demanding equality and ending feudal privileges.

Cromwell’s Commonwealth preceded the French Republic by well over a century, but the revolutions differed significantly in their causes, violence, and long-term impact on the nature of government and society.
